Artist Statement

My work seeks to draw on the feelings of unease that mental stimulation and growth bring by presenting subject matter that is surreal, uncanny, and borders on dark. In contrast, these concepts are delivered through a soft, harmonic visual style intended to place the audience at ease through any discord brought on by the subject matter.

Materials and textures that convey a sense of softness are sought out, as well as muted color palettes that evoke tranquility. Natural pale woods, matte ceramics, cast gypsum cement, and fibers/textiles are predominantly used. The craftsmanship of the work is kept clean and minimal to satisfy a natural desire for order within us. The harmonic geometry of our natural world, such as the golden ratio and other forms of sacred geometry guide the proportions and design. Lighting and cast shadows both extend the conceptual and give rise to our early collective unconsciousness as a species, drawing on both the comfort of light (fire) and its cast shadows, as well as the mystery of what is in darkness.

The psychological relationship we as a species have between ourselves and object/ environment is explored through the concept of space as a visual womb— a place where the audience can feel engulfed by the space, but yet completely relaxed, allowing for the exploration of more pensive subject matter. Inspiration is drawn from our natural world, not just tactile but spirituality that exists as the connection to the reoccurring patterns within our universe. Dominant themes include duality, mathematical harmony and its relation to life, as well as explorations of the human condition and the social constructs of gender.
